Evaluation Question 4

Planning and Research

For the planning stage we used Youtube to look at other music videos so that we can learn typical conventions associated in music videos, such as the artist is shown performing, the lyrics of the song influence what is shown in the video, the pace of editing fits the pace of the music, and the codes of dress reflect the mood of the song. We incorporated these conventions in our music video. We also made a blog so that we can record daily of how media coursework is progressing.

Construction

During the construction of our music video we used a Sony Video camera to film the sequences, during the "House of Fun" sequence we used disco lights to create a party effect showing that the character in the music video had grown up and was now at a party. The Mise-en-scene of the character in his house wearing young clothes such as the party hat, badge and glasses shows that he is too young for his age with the props such as party rings and banners reinforces this. The present of a childs book reflects both this and the craziness of the band themselves. The use of clothes flying on the character showed his development into a more mature man. The clothes were edited on using a reverse editing on Imovie HD on an Apple Mac computer (which we used for all of the editing).

Evaluation
I think that what worked particularly well was the use of editing as the song was cut well to the music and the scene where the clothes all fly onto the character is really effective. The Close Up shots of the disco lights during the "house of Fun" sequence are really effective in settign both the mood and the atmosphere for the song and video. If Anything could be improved I would say having more people in that sequence as it would establish the sequence as a party which wasnt particularly clear. Also having someone running up to the camera with "House of Fun" on a piece of paper may have been a bit obvious and so that maybe could have been done more effectively. The cinematography is good at the start with a variety of shots to fit into the fast paced song, however the lip synching could have been more in time with the song. I think the music video worked well within the style of music and gave an appropriate representation of the artist.

Evaluation Question 2-annotating the advert

Annotation of our advert:

This is a shot by shot annotation of our music advert, with text under the images:

In the image above we have the record label which is "stiff records", we also see their logo on our digipak. we have the logo of "itunes" where the album will be available and the time it will be available from, meaning the audience can access it as they know when its available. The above images relate to the digipak as well.

We also have the release date on the advert so that the audience will know when it is released.

Here we have the name of the band in bold lettering with the white colour making it stand out against the purple background

Here we have an image of the artists performing they look like they are enjoying themselves and are wearing bright coloured clothing to show the bright and colourful nature of the band and therefore it seems appropriate to use on our advert. We took this image from our music video in order to connect the music video and the advert.

Here we have positive reviews by two high profile music magazines who would typically review a band like Madness, with stars (out of 5) to show they liked it and a comment as you find with usual adverts.

Here we have a shot of the artist as he walks down the road wearing bright coloured clothing, which is purple fitting in with the purple colour we have used as our background colour for the advert. We took this image from our music video making a link between the advert and the video.

Here we have the album title in big bold lettering to make it stand out, the bold purple background colour shows the bright and bold nature of the band and the image they are trying to create.

Evaluation question 2

This image has been taken directly from the music video andit is used to show of he main actor of the whole music video. This specific shot show the main character in his final maturing stage. We used this shot because, we believed that it would relate to the audience because everyone in onestage of there life has to mature.

The track list fits in with our music video as it compliments the mise en scene with the blue colours and the formal font which compliments the adult side of the protagonist. It also follows typical digipak conventions as it gives the names of all the songs and puts them in a numbered order.

The imagery used in this part of the digipak uses clips from the music video to portray the theme and genre of the album in the digipak. This specific clip enables the consumer to see the whole band in one image and they would recognise it, as it a main scene whilst the lead singer is singing the chorus. It also contains typical conventions of a digipak as it uses imagery from the music video.

This section of the digipak give general and artist information to give a background and insight into the artists and how they came about to use the genre. This allows the consumer to learn more about there favourite artist.

The CD art uses the same font as other madness albums to keep the traditional madness theme. It uses typical conventions such as artist title and and album name.

The back page of the digipak contain lyrics from the song House of Fun. It also contains the Madnesses record label and the barcode for scanning recognition. This page contains typical conventions of a digipak as the record label and barcode are required.

I believe that the whole digipak contains typical convention for a digipak, it follows a set scheme, none of the colour clash, all the pictures used relate to the music video that we created.

Evaluation activities: Music Video

Evaluation activity 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real movie products? (i.e. of film opening)

CONVENTIONS:
The situations and surroundings are realistic, this appeals to the young target audience as they can relate to the narrative. For example under age drinking, in order to act cool.

The characters are young, attractive and well dressed. This appeals to the opposite sex and the audience can relate to the similar lifestyle. There is often reference to addictions such as alcohol and cigarettes. The audience are able to familiarise themselves with this and it also shows the problems young adults have in life, for example under age drinking.
The artist is often involved some way, sometimes as the protagonist.

The shots used were often close ups, emphasising emotions. This shows the protagonist enjoying themselves, and shows the strenuous steps young adults go to, to become involved in a group of friends.
In this picture you can see the protagonist under the influence of smoking, this shows the vulnerability young adults face to be part of a social group.

USE:
location for our video was our local town centre. This kept the video realistic and our target audience can relate to familiar surroundings.

We included several close-ups of the protagonist to show his emotions, It showed him excited on his way to the party, this helps the audience relate to the protagonist due to realistic features.

This music album advertisement includes many typical conventions of music adverts. A typical convention in this is that it includes the band title, it also includes the album title and the name of singles, which consumers may be able to relate to. The advert also includes the typical convention of album artwork as it tries to convey what genre of music the artist is. Another convention is the advert is that incorporates Magazine reviews rating it (NME). Additionally it includes the typical conventions of the website links for it and the sales outlets (HMV).

Looking at different colour schemes

We also have to look at what colour we will use for our font and for our actual Digipak and what image this represents, for example, we won't use the colour pink as it has female connotations and this wouldn't work with our song, band or the image we are trying to create for them.

Looking at Different Fonts

Here we see different styles of font used for various products, artists, films etc, they are in all different styles depending on the type of product that they are and therefore we need to used lettering which is more exciting and bold in order to show "the madness" of Madness themselves and of the video, this will create a image of craziness and freedom for the band.

House of Fun Media video

Designing the digipak

We have to come up with a design for our digipak using images which relate to the genre of our song/artist "the madness" the artists image and our music video itself, possibly even using images from the video on our digipak. We have to have a track list, images of the artist, lyrics and a space for the CD to go into. Our digipak is a 6 panel digipak.

Our Media Project- William Wise

For our media project, we chose the song House of fun by Madness. We chose this song as it is light-hearted and we wanted to go for a comical approach. We first had to plan the music video, this was done by creating storyboards and then scanning them onto the blog which we have done. Once all the planning was up to satisfactory, we went out filming.

During filming we had our ups and downs. Sometimes there was conflict in deciding what should be done. I decided to be the leader of the group and made the big decisions on what should be done. The group responded positively and so we worked very hard to try and achieve an excellent music video, this involved filming not only weekdays but weekends as well. Mise - en- scene helped us to give the music video a comical approach. We used bright and weird clothing to achieve this. For example a party hat, sunglasses, a purple suit jacket and other vibrant clothes.

For the media project i decided to be the cinematographer. I tried to be creative and professional with the type of camera shots i chose. One of the shots which i felt was creative was the point of view shot through the sunglasses looking at the book, this took a while to achieve the right shot but in the end i think it payed off. I used a variety of camera shots to really emphasise my camera skills and to show that i am capable of achieving this

Student Digipak Analysis - Jack Brown

This digipak follows a lot of the typical conventions of a digipak. The artist name and album name is clearly printed on the front cover. The colour scheme and the images used portrays the style of genre the artist is involved in. It has track listings on the back of cover. It doesn't seem to contain any kind of price and images of the band, but it does contain an image from the music video. I't doesn't contain any artist info.

As a whole the album is well designed because it portrays the genre of the artist, the dark colours and sharp dark writing portrays a dark genre. It could of contained more information on the band and images of the band, maybe some reviews from peers. It could of contained lyrics as well. The album design relates to the genre but it could be considered as boring.

Analysis of the Vixens Digipak- William Wise

The Vixens Digipak shows typical conventions associated in a digipak. They have shown pictures of the artists and making them look presentable. They have used big bold and colorful titles to give the digipak a professional and vibrant look. The digipak shows the track-list and the bar code as well. The representation of the group shows them as glamourous, successful and professional. This can be seen by the bright and sparkly clothes they are wearing and the make up. The digipak has a number of strengths as it looks professional due to the visual effects. They showed most conventions associated in a digipak. They also showed the names of the artists in their ow unique style, this is good as it personalizes each character.

Analysis of a student digipak, Oliver Thompson

This digipak contains typical digipak conventions. The artist name The Jane Bradfords is included and on the back page there is a shot list. Another convention added was the bar code and copyright information also on the back page. There is the artist name on the spine of the album and another convention used was the lyrics on the inside of the cover. The colour scheme also compliments itself and helps to give idea to what is the genre of the music.

This digipak worked well as the artist title and and other information was clearly shown through the vibrant colour scheme which would help to attract consumers. Also there is effective use of lyrics in the cover. However it does not contain important typical conventions such as Artist imagery is not included.
